Will Ferrell is in talks to star as the NFL legend John Madden in five-time Oscar nominee David O. Russell’s biopic “Madden” at Amazon and MGM.
Based on a Black List script by Cambron Clark, Russell was in the midst of a rewrite when the writer’s strike halted everything.
Madden rose from humble beginnings to leave a permanent mark on football as a coach, on broadcast football as one of its most famous commentators, on video games with a franchise built on his name, and on pop culture in general.
Todd Black, Jonathan Shukat, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch produce. The project is quite separate from the Gavin O’Connor-directed mini-series “All Madden” which was announced back in Februay.
Ferrell was most recently in popular Apple TV+ holiday musical comedy “Spirited” and the miniseries “The Shrink Next Door”. He will soon be seen as Mattel’s CEO in the Greta Gerwig-directed “Barbie” film at Warner Bros. Pictures, and the R-rated comedy “Strays” at Universal Pictures.
Russell is coming off a rather dismal reception to his period heist tale “Amsterdam”. He also has the film “Super Toys,” starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Keke Palmer, on the way.
