Spielberg: Dark Knight Deserved A Best Pic Nom

Warner Bros. Pictures

Filmmaking icon Steven Spielberg, chatting about his multiple Oscar nominations this morning for “The Fabelmans,” and indicates he’s happy the expanded Best Picture category is working the way it should.

The Best Picture award consisted of five nominees until after the 2009 ceremony when it was expanded to up to ten. Since late 2020, the list was made into a mandatory ten titles.

That has resulted in box-office giants “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick” making the grade this year along with $100M+ earning hits like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Elvis” also in contention alongside the small arthouse darlings like “TÁR,” “Women Talking” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” that have dominated the category over the past fifteen years or so.

Spielberg tells Deadline he’s “really encouraged” by the Academy recognising the two box-office giants. He also doesn’t want anyone to forget the egregious mistake the Academy made of not nominating one particular film – the catalyst for the expansion of the Best Picture category in the first place:

“It came late for the film that should have been nominated a number of years ago, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’. That movie would have definitely garnered a Best Picture Nomination today, so having these two blockbusters solidly presented on the top 10 list is something we should all be celebrating.”

“The Dark Knight” scored eight nominations but missed out on the Best Picture nominations of that year to “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Frost/Nixon,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Milk” and “The Reader”.
