“One Piece” Creator On Live-Action Series

Netflix

Eiichiro Oda, creator of the massive anime and manga franchise “One Piece,” has offered an update on the upcoming Netflix live-action series adaptation of the property.

In a letter posted on Instagram, Oda says he’s been working with Tomorrow Studios and Netflix for quite some time now. He says all involved in the show have “been hard at work this entire time” and that “each and every entity involved is working in sync”.

He says that “Considering my expected life span, I believe this is the last chance to bring ONE PIECE to the entire world. If we’re going to do it, I want to be able to supervise things while I’m still active.”

He goes on to say Netflix has committed enormous resources to the production. Though it was previously announced that the show would debut in 2023, Oda says Netflix has promised that they won’t launch the show until he’s satisfied.

It sounds like the streamer wants to avoid the problems that cropped up in some of their past live-action anime and manga adaptations, such as “Cowboy Bebop” and “Death Note”.

The series will follow the other-worldly adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates crew as they explore exotic islands and endless oceans in search of the ultimate fabled treasure to become the next Pirate King.

However, the Navy is on their ship’s tail, and they’re not the only crew searching for the One Piece. The series stars Inaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero Gibson, Taz Skylar and Morgan Davies.

The ten-episode series hails from Steven Maeda (“Lost,” “The X-Files”) and Matt Owens (“Luke Cage,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D”) with both co-showrunning, writing and executive producing.
