Emmy-winner Sana Lathan makes her directing debut on the Paramount film “On the Come Up”. Originally the plan was to release the film direct to Paramount+ starting September 23rd.
Now though, in the wake of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival where it landed rave critical reviews, the film is set to get a limited theatrical release on the same date with previews the night before.
At present, the film is only scheduled for a Paramount+ release in the U.S., Canada, and Italy – but the hope is to secure more international markets in the next week-and-a-half.
Based on the best-selling novel by “The Hate U Give ” author Angie Thomas, the story follows 16-year-old gifted rapper Bri who attempts to take the battle rap scene by storm in order to lift up her family and do right by the legacy of her father – a local hip hop legend whose career was cut short by gang violence.
When her first hit song goes viral for all the wrong reasons, she finds herself torn between the authenticity that got her this far and the false persona that the industry wants to impose upon her.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Lil Yachty, Cliff ‘Method Man’ Smith, Mike Epps, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Justin Martin, Titus Makin, Michael Cooper Jr., GaTa, and Lathan co-star. Kay Oyegun wrote the screenplay.
