“Last of Us,” “Wii Sports” Join Hall of Fame

Beginning in 2015, the World Video Game Hall of Fame was essentially set up to annually recognise a handful of video games that have left an impact on popular culture, the game industry and the world.

Each year a small handful of titles are selected from across the history of games and are put on display at the expanded Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, this summer.

This year four titles have been selected – Naughty Dog’s “The Last of Us,” Nintendo’s “Wii Sports,” Digital Domain and Mattel Media’s “Barbie: Fashion Designer” CD-ROM game, and the first commercial video game with 1971’s “Computer Space”.

Each of the titles has broken ground in its own way and beat out other finalists this year, such as “GoldenEye 007,” “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” “Angry Birds,” “NBA 2K,” “Quake,” “Age of Empires,” “FIFA International Soccer” and “Wizardry”.

“The Last of Us,” which was initially released in 2013, marks the most recent game of the forty to have joined the Hall of Fame thus far.

They join previous winners, including “Animal Crossing,” “Donkey Kong,” “Doom,” “Final Fantasy VII,” “Grand Theft Auto III,” “Halo: Combat Evolved,” “John Madden Football,” “King’s Quest,” “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” “Minecraft,” “Mortal Kombat,” “The Oregon Trail,” “Pac-Man,” “Pong,” “Sid Meier’s Civilization,” “The Sims,” “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Space Invaders,” “StarCraft,” “Street Fighter II,” “Super Mario Bros.,” “Super Mario Kart,” “Tomb Raider,” “Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego,” and “World of Warcraft” among others.
