Filmmaker James Gunn has clarified where the upcoming one-off “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” fits into the greater MCU.
In the wake of Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige revealing the timeline for the next two phases of the MCU, there have been some questions about where some of the projects not mentioned at the presentation fit into the greater scheme of things.
Gunn confirmed on social media that his wacky holiday special episode screening in December will serve as the ‘epilogue’ to the current ‘Phase 4’ of the MCU. It arrives just weeks after “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” serves as the official end of the fourth phase and a few months before “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” kicks off the fifth phase.
This is not unusual for Marvel as there’s debate over the labelling of Tom Holland’s second solo Spider-Man film “Spider-Man: Far from Home”, with some calling it the epilogue to the third phase of the MCU while the much bigger event that was “Avengers: Endgame” was the official ‘end’.
Whatever the case, Gunn himself is very happy with the special saying:
“It’s totally ridiculous, and every day we can’t believe that we’re making it. We all completely love it. It is unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before. I can’t wait for people to see it.”
He also confirms it’s both canon and required viewing before “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” hits in May next year as “there’s a lot of big information in there”. The holiday special will arrive on the Disney+ streaming service sometime in December.
