Focus Features is reportedly closing a major $30 million worldwide rights deal for the re-teaming of “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti and director Alexander Payne in “The Holdovers”.
The project reportedly held a discreet screening in Toronto for buyers on Sunday with Focus set to give the film a theatrical release.
David Hemingson penned the comedy starring Giamatti as a universally disliked and pompous teacher at the prep school Deerfield Academy. His students and his whole faculty hate him.
With no family and nowhere to go over Christmas holiday in 1970, he remains at school to supervise students unable to journey home. Soon he’s left with just two others in the school – a troublemaking 15-year-old named Angus, and the Academy’s head cook who caters to sons of privilege and whose own son recently was lost in Vietnam.
All three are very different shipwrecked people who share comic misadventures during two very snowy weeks in New England and realise that none of them is beholden to their past.
