“Doctor Sleep” and “Midnight Mass” filmmaker Mike Flanagan has reportedly recently pitched a feature film about the Batman villain Clayface over at Warner Bros. Pictures.
According to Deadline, there is no word on a greenlight yet, but the studio has not said ‘No’ at this point. No offers or deals are in place.
Flanagan and his Intrepid Pictures partner Trevor Macy reportedly had a meeting with new DC Bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran about the project, which they are planning as a standalone (ala “Joker”) with Clayface actually as a good guy with the tale being a horror-leaning tragedy.
Sources for the trade, however, say Clayface is a big addition to Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” sequel that is in the works for an October 3rd 2025 release.
Clayface was introduced in the DC comics in 1940 but the shapeshifting villain is best remembered for this “Batman: The Animated Series” run in the 1990s. That version had him as a slightly washed-up actor who is forced to ingest a bunch of experimental skin cream from a mobster’s businesses which turns him into a shapeshifter.
The character has also appeared in live-action form in the likes of “Birds of Prey,” “Gotham,” and “Pennyworth”.
