Last month ahead of the launch of the third season of “The Mandalorian,” showrunner Jon Favreau was asked about his thoughts of a potential series finale down the line.
At the time he said he hadn’t planned an ending for the series as yet, telling Total Film: “It’s not like there’s a finale that we’re building to that I have in mind. Quite the contrary, I love for these stories to go on and on. And so these characters potentially could be with us for a while.”
Cut to few weeks later with “The Mandalorian” about to hit the midpoint of its third season, and this time both Favreau and fellow executive producer Dave Filoni spoke with EW’s Star Wars podcast and were asked about how much longer all these “Star Wars” shows could go.
Favreau hasn’t changed his mind, in fact he’s sticking with it as long as they’re able to with no plans to rush a wrap-up on the show saying: “I’m having a blast, and I love working with Dave, and I love how the characters develop over time.”
He goes on to praise that “other stories now being told in that same time period”, and that he loves “collaborating with all these different filmmakers and different storytellers” on the show:
“It’s a really wonderful format, and you really grow to appreciate having such a good team around you that, for each new film, you would have to assemble. But [with The Mandalorian] we get to inherit this great group of talented people that we could work with every year.
I don’t know what would make me not enjoy doing it, especially as long as the audience is connecting with these characters. This feels like a really enjoyable moment. And I love this format of telling one chapter at a time and keeping the audience guessing, but also fulfilling certain expectations.”
So far the audience would seem to agree with him – whilst the third season opener scored some soft reviews, the subsequent two episodes by directors Rachel Morrison and Lee Isaac Chung have drawn raves. A fourth episode, directed by Carl Weathers, will be released in a few hours.
